Automatic FFL(tm) | How to Choose an FFL Checkout Provider

FFL checkout buyer's guide

Choose a Provider That Handles the Hard Parts After the Map Loads.

Dealer selection is only the visible step. The real test is what happens to the certificate, shipping destination, mixed cart, order data, expiration, and the edge case your store discovers after launch.

  • Platform-specific integrations
  • Certificate lifecycle controls
  • Daily dealer data updates
  • Built by an FFL, for FFLs

Certificate handling under the hood

A File Upload Button Is Not a Certificate Workflow.

If every uploaded file is treated as trusted, an unrelated, incorrect, expired, or superseded certificate can travel farther into fulfillment than it should. Ask the provider what it does between upload and order attachment.

  1. 01

    Receive the upload

Dealers and participating merchants can contribute PDFs, images, or certificate collections.

  2. 02

    Check and read the document

AI-assisted processing looks for information expected on an FFL certificate, then extracts the FFL number and expiration date.

  3. 03

    Match and gate

The license must match an existing dealer record. Expired records stay out, and a certificate with an earlier or equal expiration date does not replace one with a later expiration date.

  4. 04

    Carry it to the order

A matching, non-expired certificate can be made available on qualifying orders for supported platforms.

Ask for the Workflow, Not the Feature Label.

“FFL checkout,” “certificate upload,” and “dealer map” can describe very different products. These follow-up questions expose what the labels leave out.

Ask This Look For Automatic FFL Approach
“How do you handle a bad or expired upload?” Document parsing, dealer matching, expiration rules, and clear failure handling. AI-assisted document review and extraction, existing-dealer matching, active-certificate gating, and preservation of the record with the later expiration date.
“How often is dealer data refreshed?” A stated update cadence and a process for expired or changed license records. Dealer data is updated with ATF data daily, with EZ Check access available from dealer records.
“Show me a mixed cart.” A platform-specific answer for firearms, ammunition, and ordinary products. Automatic FFL documents the exact mixed-cart behavior for each supported platform instead of pretending one routing model fits all.
“What data is on the order?” The selected FFL destination plus the details fulfillment needs without re-keying. Supported flows can include dealer address, license number, expiration, EZ Check information, and an available certificate link.
“Can I shape the dealer list?” Search, enable/disable controls, preferences, and operational overrides. Merchants can search dealers, enable or prefer locations, manage custom information, and use bulk import/export workflows.
“What happens when our workflow is unusual?” Domain-aware support and a direct path to the team responsible for the integration. Merchants can share priorities directly with the Automatic FFL team and discuss focused product changes with people who understand FFL ecommerce.

Platform fit is a feature

Make the Provider Explain Your Exact Checkout.

Automatic FFL maintains separate integration paths because the platforms do not share one checkout, order, or shipping model. Feature availability varies by platform, and a credible provider should make those boundaries clear before launch.

The niche feature test

Choose a Team That Can Move When Your Workflow Does.

FFL ecommerce produces requirements a generic checkout roadmap may never anticipate: a particular shipping recipient, a residential-dealer label, a product-specific routing rule, a new order field, or a merchant-specific dealer control.

Automatic FFL gives merchants a direct path to the people responsible for the integrations. Share the real workflow, and we can evaluate a focused request quickly. When it fits the product and platform, a tightly scoped improvement can move without waiting for a broad ecommerce release.

Bring us the edge case

“Our checkout needs to…”

  • Route a specific product differently
  • Carry another FFL field to fulfillment
  • Prioritize a dealer rule unique to the store
  • Work with a platform extension already in use

We will tell you what is possible, what is platform-specific, and what needs more discovery.

Before you choose

FFL Checkout Provider Questions.

Is a dealer map enough for FFL checkout?
No. The map helps a shopper choose a dealer, but the provider also needs to carry the correct shipping destination and FFL details into the order, handle the platform’s cart model, manage dealer and certificate data, and support fulfillment after checkout.
Should a provider automatically trust uploaded certificates?
Treat that as a warning sign. Ask how the provider extracts and matches license data, handles an invalid date or unmatched dealer, keeps expired certificates out of active use, and prevents a certificate with an earlier or equal expiration date from replacing one with a later expiration date.
Does Automatic FFL use AI to approve certificates?
Automatic FFL uses AI-assisted processing to look for expected FFL certificate information and determine whether the upload appears to be an FFL certificate. It then extracts the FFL number and expiration date before the system applies dealer-matching and expiration rules. AI assistance does not replace a merchant’s compliance review or make a legal determination about a transfer.
Why does platform-specific implementation matter?
WooCommerce, BigCommerce, Adobe Commerce, and Shopify use different checkout, address, order, and extension models. A platform-specific integration can preserve the behavior the merchant expects instead of forcing every store into one generic embed.
Does Automatic FFL support firearms on Shopify?
No. The current Shopify product is Automatic FFL Ammo for state-specific ammunition-to-FFL routing. Automatic FFL does not present the Shopify integration as firearm-order support.
Will Automatic FFL build every feature request?
No provider should promise that. Automatic FFL gives merchants a direct way to share priorities and discuss operational edge cases with the team responsible for the integrations. Focused requests can be evaluated quickly, but scope, platform limits, compliance impact, and product fit still determine what ships.
How should I test a provider during a trial?
Use your real catalog and test each scenario that applies to your platform, plan, and product mix: a firearm-only cart, a mixed cart, an ammunition rule, a dealer with a certificate, a dealer without a certificate, an address change, and the final order record. Confirm the behavior against the provider’s platform-specific documentation.
