FFL checkout buyer's guide
Dealer selection is only the visible step. The real test is what happens to the certificate, shipping destination, mixed cart, order data, expiration, and the edge case your store discovers after launch.
Certificate handling under the hood
If every uploaded file is treated as trusted, an unrelated, incorrect, expired, or superseded certificate can travel farther into fulfillment than it should. Ask the provider what it does between upload and order attachment.
Dealers and participating merchants can contribute PDFs, images, or certificate collections.
AI-assisted processing looks for information expected on an FFL certificate, then extracts the FFL number and expiration date.
The license must match an existing dealer record. Expired records stay out, and a certificate with an earlier or equal expiration date does not replace one with a later expiration date.
A matching, non-expired certificate can be made available on qualifying orders for supported platforms.
Automatic FFL uses AI to assist with data extraction—not to replace your compliance judgment. Matching, date rules, platform behavior, and your own operating procedures still matter.

“FFL checkout,” “certificate upload,” and “dealer map” can describe very different products. These follow-up questions expose what the labels leave out.
| Ask This | Look For | Automatic FFL Approach |
|---|---|---|
| “How do you handle a bad or expired upload?” | Document parsing, dealer matching, expiration rules, and clear failure handling. | AI-assisted document review and extraction, existing-dealer matching, active-certificate gating, and preservation of the record with the later expiration date. |
| “How often is dealer data refreshed?” | A stated update cadence and a process for expired or changed license records. | Dealer data is updated with ATF data daily, with EZ Check access available from dealer records. |
| “Show me a mixed cart.” | A platform-specific answer for firearms, ammunition, and ordinary products. | Automatic FFL documents the exact mixed-cart behavior for each supported platform instead of pretending one routing model fits all. |
| “What data is on the order?” | The selected FFL destination plus the details fulfillment needs without re-keying. | Supported flows can include dealer address, license number, expiration, EZ Check information, and an available certificate link. |
| “Can I shape the dealer list?” | Search, enable/disable controls, preferences, and operational overrides. | Merchants can search dealers, enable or prefer locations, manage custom information, and use bulk import/export workflows. |
| “What happens when our workflow is unusual?” | Domain-aware support and a direct path to the team responsible for the integration. | Merchants can share priorities directly with the Automatic FFL team and discuss focused product changes with people who understand FFL ecommerce. |
Platform fit is a feature
Automatic FFL maintains separate integration paths because the platforms do not share one checkout, order, or shipping model. Feature availability varies by platform, and a credible provider should make those boundaries clear before launch.

FFL ecommerce produces requirements a generic checkout roadmap may never anticipate: a particular shipping recipient, a residential-dealer label, a product-specific routing rule, a new order field, or a merchant-specific dealer control.
Automatic FFL gives merchants a direct path to the people responsible for the integrations. Share the real workflow, and we can evaluate a focused request quickly. When it fits the product and platform, a tightly scoped improvement can move without waiting for a broad ecommerce release.
