Checkout friction at dealer selection, state routing, mixed-cart shipping, and mobile can cost FFL retailers orders. A customer may add a firearm and a scope to their cart, only to stall when they need to choose a receiving dealer and understand where each item will ship.
These seven checks can help firearm and ammunition retailers uncover avoidable friction. Use them to decide what to investigate, then confirm the cause before changing your setup.
What to Check First
- Follow the path from dealer search to a completed order.
- Test firearm-only, ammo-only, and mixed carts on your own platform.
- Review missing-dealer reports, state-routing messages, and the mobile experience.
- Check that the selected dealer and available certificate information reach fulfillment.
1. Buyers Leave Before Selecting a Dealer
What to look for: Shoppers reach the FFL step but leave before choosing a dealer or continuing with checkout.
What to check: Does the search load? Are instructions visible? Can the shopper select a result and move forward? Review errors and support reports alongside your checkout analytics.
When tracking is available, measure how many shoppers who see the dealer step select an FFL and complete an order. Compare similar carts, devices, and traffic sources over time. A drop at this step is a reason to investigate; it does not establish that the locator caused it.
If your reports do not track dealer selection, begin with test checkouts and ask your developer to add the missing tracking. Use your store’s baseline instead of an unsupported industry cutoff.
2. Shoppers Keep Re-Entering Their Location
What to look for: Customers enter a ZIP code, go back, and enter it again. Support may report that the locator keeps showing the wrong area.
What to check: Test how search location behaves after sign-in, a cart change, or returning to checkout. Where your integration supports it, use the shopper’s current address to suggest nearby dealers while keeping the search location editable.
A shopper may intentionally search near work or another location. The goal is to preserve their choices and make corrections easy. Keep the shopper’s address and the receiving dealer’s address clearly labeled, especially when accessories ship separately.
3. Customers Say Their Dealer Is Missing
What to look for: Repeated questions such as “Why isn’t my dealer listed?” or “Why are there no results near me?”
According to Automatic FFL’s dealer data, there are about 30,000 active commercial FFLs. That national count provides context, but local search results also depend on the search radius, dealer eligibility, merchant settings, and whether the search service is working.
What to check: Reproduce the search using the customer’s ZIP code. Review the radius and enabled-dealer settings, check the dealer record, and confirm that the map and search services load correctly. Group support requests by cause so you can fix a recurring issue.
Automatic FFL syncs dealer records daily against ATF source data. Fresh license records help, but license status, certificate availability, and a dealer’s current transfer policies are separate details. Make it easy for customers to get help when a dealer cannot be selected.
4. State-Routing Messages Leave Buyers Unsure What to Do
What to look for: Customers in a particular state repeatedly encounter a block, contact support, or stop when ammunition triggers dealer selection.
What to check: Identify the exact products, destination, and message involved. Check product classifications and your configured state rules. A higher exit rate alone does not tell you whether the rule is wrong, the message is unclear, or the store cannot fulfill that order.
Make the next step explicit. A message asking the shopper to select an FFL for ammunition should explain that action. If an item cannot be shipped to the selected destination, identify the affected item and explain the applicable restriction.
Automatic FFL supports separate firearm and ammunition classifications and per-state ammo routing settings. Review those settings against the requirements that apply to your store. Test ammo-only carts and carts containing both firearms and ammunition, since routing can depend on the cart and merchant configuration.
5. Mixed Carts Create Confusion About Shipping
What to look for: Customers ask whether accessories will go to the dealer, remove items after seeing the shipping step, or abandon a cart containing both FFL-required and standard products.
What to check: Put a firearm and an eligible accessory in a test cart. Follow the checkout through to the resulting order or orders. Confirm that destinations, shipping charges, and any follow-on checkout are clear.
Automatic FFL handles this differently by platform:
- BigCommerce: Separate shipping consignments let FFL items go to the selected dealer and eligible standard items go to the shopper within one order and one payment.
- WooCommerce: Save For Later groups the cart for sequential checkouts. The shopper purchases one group, then gets the remaining items in a follow-on checkout without rebuilding the cart. Either group can go first.
For the firearm-and-scope example, the customer should understand which destination receives each item and what remains to be purchased. Evaluate whether that sequence is clear on your platform.
6. Buyers Search for Dealers but Struggle to Choose One
What to look for: Shoppers keep opening results, changing their search, or asking which dealer they should select.
What to check: Can customers compare the dealer’s name, location, and available contact details? Are your preferred dealers easy to identify? Does a short explanation clarify what choosing a receiving dealer means?
Show reliable information that helps the decision. Include transfer fees or hours when you have verified them, and provide a way to confirm details that are unknown. Avoid implying that a license record guarantees acceptance of every transfer.
Automatic FFL includes controls for enabling and preferring dealers. Its certificate network also provides scanned FFLs for participating dealers. Those controls and available documents can help both the shopper choosing a dealer and the team preparing the shipment.
7. The Dealer Step Is Difficult to Use on a Phone
What to look for: Search controls hidden by the keyboard, small selection buttons, hard-to-read dealer cards, a map that traps scrolling, or a selected dealer that disappears when the shopper continues.
What to check: Run the full checkout on a phone, including changing the ZIP code, choosing a different dealer, and returning from the next step. Test loading behavior on a typical mobile connection.
Make dealer details and the selected result easy to read without relying on precise map taps. Keep ZIP search available if location detection is offered and the shopper declines permission.
Compare mobile and desktop results for similar carts and traffic sources. Use repeatable problems and a meaningful volume of sessions to prioritize fixes; a percentage gap by itself is not a diagnosis.
Follow the Test Through to Fulfillment
A successful checkout also needs to give your team the right information to ship the order. After a test purchase, confirm the selected dealer, shipping destination, and available FFL details appear where staff process orders.
Automatic FFL can attach dealer license information, EZ Check links, and available certificate links to supported platform orders. Certificate coverage is a subset of the dealer database, so your workflow should also handle orders where a scanned certificate is not already available. See the platform documentation for the relevant settings.
Start With One Repeatable Problem
Choose a problem you can reproduce or see repeatedly in support requests. Record what happens, make a focused change, and test the same cart again. Then watch dealer selection, completed orders, and related support requests over a comparable period.
If traffic is low, a test checkout can reveal a broken interaction before analytics provides a useful pattern. Fix confirmed errors first, then measure whether shoppers complete more orders.
